EC VICE-PRESIDENT VALDIS DOMBROVSKIS IS AWARDED RTU HONORARY MEMBER DIPLOMA

On Friday, October 6, at the ceremonial meeting of RTU Senate RTU Rector Academician Leonīds Ribickis awarded the Honorary Member Diploma to the Vice-President of the European Commission (EC) and graduate of the Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management (FEEM) of Riga Technical University (RTU) Valdis Dombrovskis. After the meeting V. Dombrovskis delivered a lecture «Strengthening of European Economic and Monetary Union» to the academic staff and students of RTU. After the lecture, he visited RTU Design Factory and laboratories of the Faculty of Power and Electrical Engineering.

When greeting V. Dombrovskis, RTU Rector Academician L.Ribickis said, «This is a very solemn and special occasion on our 155th anniversary, which we will be celebrating on October 14». Valdis Dombrovskis –Vice-President for the Euro and Social Dialogue, also in charge of Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union – received RTU Honorary Member Diploma for support in improvement of RTU study programmes and development of higher education study field «Internal Security and Civil Protection» according to the European Union (EU) guidelines.

«It is a great pleasure and honour for me to be in my Alma Mater,» said V. Dombrovskis receiving the Honorary Member Diploma, thanking the administration and academic staff of RTU, who «invest a lot of work in shaping the future and strengthening the national economy». The Vice-President of EC emphasised that RTU is one of the pillars of national economy and competitiveness, and knowledge provided by RTU has high practical applicability and high demand in the labour market.

«Valdis Dombrovskis has not commenced cooperation with the Faculty after receiving the diploma – he is with us both on celebrations and continues to give great support to our Faculty, especially in the field related to the training of customs and tax specialists,» said the Director of FEEM International Business and Customs Institute Aivars Vilnis Krastiņš, emphasising that V. Dombrovskis’ vision and understanding of labour dynamics, migration and security aspects notably contribute to the development of internationally competitive studies at FEEM, while his success confirms that RTU educates and trains high-level specialists.

V. Dombrovskis graduated from RTU FEEM in 1995, earning a Bachelor’s degree, and in 2007 received a Master’s degree. He studied physics at the University of Latvia and was engaged in research in Germany and the USA; however, his practical work was related to the specialty acquired at RTU. V. Dombrovskis worked at the Bank of Latvia, was the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Latvia and for three times – Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, and in 2014 he became Vice-President of the European Commission.

Persons working in spheres of science, education, culture, social welfare, national economy and state administration of Latvia and other countries, who have contributed to the substantial development of the University, can be elected RTU Honorary Members. After restoration of independence of the Republic of Latvia RTU honorary member status has been granted to only six people – Academician Jānis Stradiņš, Professor of Zürich Federal Technical Higher School Konrad Osterwalder, Vice President for Finance and Management, Buffalo State, the State University of New York Voldemar A. Innus, Former President of the Republic of Latvia Andris Bērziņš, Chairman of the Board of Association of Mechanical Engineering and Metalworking Industries of Latvia Vilnis Rantiņš and now – Valdis Dombrovskis.
