Modern studies at RTU FEEM under the guidance of experienced business professionals

Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management of Riga Technical University (RTU FEEM) has developed a successful and close cooperation with Business Efficiency Association Latvia (BEA) professionals who are actively involved in the study process with the aim of educating students – future business and quality system managers – in applying efficiency methods in organization management and work process improvement.

Nowadays, in order to ensure the development and competitiveness of organizations, it is essential to look for new forms of work organization, process improvement, product and service innovation, that would contribute to an increase in productivity, quality and economic efficiency, giving the opportunity to pay a competitive salary and at the same time provide for a higher profit than the average in the industry.

In Latvia, an in-depth understanding of the efficiency of organizations and its improvement methods arose relatively recently. More and more Latvian managers, who successfully apply lean management techniques in their organizations, are aware of the role of efficiency in improving and promoting continuous development of organizations.

The Department of Quality Technologies of RTU FEEM Institute for Quality Engineering, under the guidance of Head of the Department, Professor Inga Lapiņa invite BEA board members, who have in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical experience in high efficiency methods in different organizations, to participate in the implementation of the bachelor and master professional study programs “Total Quality Management”.

Such cooperation greatly enhances the quality of studies, students independently carry out quality, safety and sustainability assessment of business processes, determine the content and importance of the key operations, support and management processes by using Lean, 6 Sigma, TOC and other modern process improvement methodologies. Students develop the ability to distinguish between traditional business management principles and to introduce modern Lean management principles, linking them with the key performance indicators (KPI), learn how to identify low efficiency and loss causes and develop proposals to increase the efficiency, as well as calculate the economic effect and cost reduction of the recommended improvement not with the help of tax optimization but by introducing Lean management system in the organization.

The study course of efficiency application methods includes theoretical knowledge acquisition, participation in practical and independent tasks, games and discussions.

The implementation of the study course “Process management techniques” involved the BEA board members and specialists representing different economic sectors in Latvia: Ginta Grandāne, Lean.lv representative in Latvia and co-founder and board member of Business Efficiency Association; Kristīne Sarkane, finance and management professional; Vladislav Sorokin, Continuous Improvement Manager at Solvay Business Services Latvia Ltd.; Uldis Piekuss, Sales Department Manager at JSC Virši-A; Ilona Griboņika, Excellence specialist at JELD-WEN Latvija Ltd.; Daiga Leimane, industrial efficiency improvement specialist at the company Hansa Electronics; Jānis Freibergs, plant manager assistant at Brabantia Latvia Ltd.

BEA is a leading professional association in applying efficiency methods in Latvia, uniting 100 enterprises, and whose mission is to help organizations become more competitive by sharing knowledge and practical experience in applying efficiency methods.
