What Can the New Great Silk Road Do for Ukraine?

The new Great Silk Road is a feasible and near-future project, and China has some plans and objectives for Ukraine as well. The scale of these plans might come as a surprise to Ukrainians even though most materials and initiatives pertaining to this project are public, said Serhiy Lesnyak, a lecturer in International Business and Director of RR Commodities (China), during a meeting with the LvBS Community and founders/ top management of Ukrainian businesses.

“The Chinese claim that the purpose of building this road is to improve trade relations with the world. They have a dedicated project for Ukraine aimed at bypassing Russia – a barge crossing via Georgia to Odessa. The Chinese are looking into the possibility of designing a unified tariff system to make this route more beneficial than the one via Russia,” explained the lecturer.

Serhiy Lesnyak also pointed out that the Chinese government had already developed territorial plans and designs for the new Great Silk Road. “They even have projects in place to purchase land plots and develop mineral resources on the territories in various countries adjacent to this transportation corridor,” he added. Ukrainian businesses must comprehend that the Chinese are fast and furious when it comes to the implementation of infrastructural projects, so they must start treating China as a close and influential neighbor.

The participating entrepreneurs got interested in cooperation with China, in particular in the area of export, and discussed examples of successful companies operating in China. According to Mr. Lesnyak, China makes most investments in Ukraine in such sectors as transshipment, solar energy, and communications.

Background: Serhiy Lesnyak is Director of RR Commodities (Shanghai) and a lecturer in International Business. Over the last 14 years, he has been living and working in China. His areas of interest include business, economy, and culture of the Far East. He is the author of several publications on business topics and Chinese history. Serhiy is one of the founders of the Ukrainian community in Shanghai and a member of the Shanghai Tai Chi Association (Chen). He also produced the first ever Ukrainian translation of Sun Tzu’s famous The Art of War and published it in cooperation with the UCU’s Lviv Business School.
