CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF JSC SAKRET HOLDINGS ANDRIS VANAGS WAS ELECTED CHAIRPERSON OF RTU COUNCIL

On Tuesday, 1 March 2022, a meeting of the Council of Riga Technical University (RTU) was held for the first time, during which the Chair of the Board of JSC Sakret Holdings Andris Vanags was elected Chair of RTU Council, and the Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management of RTU Anita Straujuma was elected Deputy Chairperson.

According to the Law on Higher Education Institutions, RTU Council consists of 11 members; five of them are appointed by RTU Senate, five – by the Ministry of Education and Science (MES) and nominated by the Cabinet of Ministers, and one is nominated by the President. On 15 February, the new Council of RTU was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, while on 21 February the Constitutional Assembly of RTU voted in favour of the new Council.

Experienced experts in the field of education and science were elected from RTU to the Council – Professor at RTU Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications Jurģis Poriņš, Leading Researcher at RTU Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry Jānis Ločs, Associate Professor at RTU Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management Anita Straujuma, Professor at RTU Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology Jānis Grabis and Researcher at RTU Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications Jānis Braunfelds. RTU representatives are from the academic environment and will ensure academic and scientific competence in the Council.

The MES chose the following experts for RTU Council: Neils Kalniņš, Director of 5G Techritory programme at the Electronic Communications Office of Latvia; Sanda Liepiņa, Chairperson of the Advisory Council of RTU Riga Business School and the Lead of international programmes of the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Private Sector Financing Unit; Andris Vanags, Chair of the Board of JSC Sakret Holdings, Associate Professor at Turība University, Adviser to the Chair of the Board of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as well as two international experts – RTU Honorary Doctor, Professor at Rhine-Westphalia Technical University in Germany Rik De Doncker, Dean of Aalto University School of Engineering and Professor of Mechanical Engineering Gary B. Marquis.

In his turn, President Egils Levits nominated Andris Ambainis, Professor at the Faculty of Computer Science of the University of Latvia (UL), Professor at the Institute for Quantum Computing of the University of Waterloo, member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.

Higher education councils are a new institution for the internal management of higher education institutions. It is a collegial highest decision-making body responsible for the sustainable development, strategic and financial supervision of a higher education institution. The council must also ensure the operation of the state higher education institution in accordance with the goals set in its development strategy.
