Role of Media in the Development of Responsible and Smart Society Discussed
SMK University of Applied Social Sciences held the conference in Klaipeda on 25th of January to discuss how mass media, social media and digital technologies determine the changes and the development processes in the contemporary society.
The conference was directed to scientist, researchers, experts, media and communications specialists and students giving an opportunity to share the ideas about the importance of media in the process of globalisation of economy, its influence on social and business sectors, media impact on the development of smart society. Concept and meaning of media in contemporary society and recent media research findings were presented by scientists during plenary session. Speakers presented scientific overview of the understanding of media, methodological approach towards media research, findings on media impact on the development of the society, main trends of the future research and problematic issues in contemporary media.
Panel discussion following plenary session, gave the opportunity for scientists, experts, educators and representatives of mass media to discuss main problematic issues, media impact on various aspects of our society, questions of media ecology and education of media content. It was emphasised that formal educational system in today’s society confronts a large competitor – the mass media, which is a new global coexistence of many information environments used for various purposes – to inform, to educate, to entertain, to communicate.
Later on speakers and experts made presentations on various aspects of media education, national and cultural identity, media influence on social innovation and the development of responsible and smart society. Participants of the conference agreed that future research should determine the role of media in smart and responsible society, understanding the importance of sustainable consumption of media products and media ecology in the society, improving positive media experience, developing inner abilities of selection and smart usage of informational loads.
