RTU RANKS THE BEST AMONG BALTIC UNIVERSITIES ACCORDING TO THE «QS WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS: SUSTAINABILITY 2023»

Having evaluated the impact of Riga Technical University (RTU) in ensuring sustainability, RTU has been recognised as the best not only in Latvia, but also in the Baltic States according to the «QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2023». In the overall assessment, the university is ranked as the world’s 451st – 500th. RTU has achieved the best results in the environmental sustainability performance, being ranked as the 421st in this position.

The «QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2023» has two categories, where environmental impact and social impact of higher education institutions are assessed. The category focusing on environmental impact provides an idea whether work, studies and scientific research are organised in a higher education institution with account of different aspects of environmental sustainability. Whereas, the category focusing on social impact provides an idea about the quality of education and social policy in a higher education institution.

In each of these categories, higher education institutions are assessed according to certain criteria. The assessment criteria of the social impact category are employment, equality, life quality, impact on education and knowledge exchange. In its turn, the environmental impact criteria are educational, institutional and scientific sustainability.

The highest assessment of RTU is in its environmental impact, ranking the university as the 421st. The sustainable, smart and environmentally-friendly development of the university is included in RTU strategic plans. By performing sustainable management of resources, extending the awareness of RTU personnel and students in environmental issues and facilitating creation and usage of environmentally-friendly technologies. RTU implements the Green Ķīpsala initiative, where personnel and students are encouraged to save resources and where innovations of RTU scientists play an important role – they are tested at RTU Ķīpsala Campus, this way promoting its sustainable management.

In the social impact category, RTU is ranked the 501st +. Being aware that human resources are most important at RTU, the university shapes the motivating environment for its personnel and students. For a number of years, RTU has been recognised as the «Family-Friendly Workplace», which is confirmed by the RTU support to its employees, allowing them to coordinate the fulfilment of their professional duties with their family life. RTU personnel are provided with flexible working conditions and growth opportunities, and RTU has introduced the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) quality management system in its management model, having obtained the four-star assessment for it – Recognized by EFQM.

The «QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2023» is the first ranking of this type which aims at assessing how universities are acting to resolve global issues – environmental, social and management problems. 700 higher education institutions have been assessed in the ranking, and only two higher education institutions from Latvia are included into it – RTU (451st – 500th) and the University of Latvia (501st – 550th). From Estonia, the University of Tartu is included in the ranking (501st –550th), and from Lithuania, the University of Vilnius (600th +). The top three higher education institutions in the ranking are the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), USA, and two Canadian higher education institutions – the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia.
