Workshop: Writing Effective Cases

24-25 January 2019 at ESADE Business School, Spain

Are you new to case writing or keen to sharpen your case writing skills? This two-day Writing Effective Cases Workshop will give you the skills and confidence you need to create your own highly effective teaching cases. It is ideal for those with little or no experience of writing cases, as well as more experienced case authors, who want to learn even more about the ‘tricks of the trade’ and spend some time working on their ideas in a structured process approach that is formed around the idea of rapid prototyping.

Overview

In this practical and intensive workshop participants will have the opportunity to take time out to develop an idea they already have, and form it into the first draft of a case and teaching note within just two days. The workshop will be supported by a case writing workbook that provides structure and exercises, and guides participants through the case writing process. The insights and knowledge acquired during this workshop will enable participants to write their own teaching cases for use in the classroom.

Objectives

During the workshop participants will work in pairs of ‘critical friends’ to prepare their case draft, teaching plan and teaching note. In doing so, the principal objectives that participants will address are to:

  • investigate what makes a good case and the benefits of a teaching note
  • develop the confidence to write their own cases
  • learn tools and techniques of case crafting to enhance the quality of the learning experience of their students.

Post workshop mentoring and review

After the workshop you will have the opportunity to discuss your case writing project further with your workshop tutor, Urs Müller, during a 30 minute one-to-one Skype mentoring consultation. Prior to the consultation you will be asked to provide information about the case you are writing (e.g. case outline, the first paragraph, the immediate issue and the assignment questions etc.). Consultations will take place on 3 March 2019 and must be booked with The Case Centre’s events team.

You will also be offered a written review of your draft case and teaching note once you have completed them after the workshop. Please note, you must take advantage of this invaluable opportunity within four months of the end of the workshop. You will receive feedback from your workshop tutor within seven days of submitting your drafts to The Case Centre’s events team.
