Success of the 10th BMDA Annual Conference

The 10th Annual BMDA conference “Winning Strategies in Challenging Times” took place on May 10-11 in Gdansk and was hosted by Faculty of Management and Economics (Gdansk University of Technology) in collaboration with Gdansk Foundation for Management Development. This international event was attended by 103 participants from 17 countries: Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and United States of America.

The conference started with the Research part where 20 research papers were presented by the authors. All the papers were divided into 6 tracks: Finance Management and Risk Taking, Human Resource Management, Strategic Management in Uncertain/Changing Environment, Successful Leadership in Turbulent Times, Cooperation of Business and Academia in Challenging Times, Entrepreneurship and Enterprise on Global Market. The best papers will be published in the Baltic Journal of Management (Emerald Publishing Group, United Kingdom), Social Sciences (Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania) or Engineering Economics (Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania) subject to peer review.

The President of BMDA, Dean of Adizes Graduate School (USA) dr. Virginijus Kundrotas warmly welcomed all participants by describing the idea and content of the conference as well as mentioning the main stakeholders and contributors of this special gathering. His speech was followed by the welcome speeches of the Heads of the conference Host institutions.

The main part of the Conference was chaired by Mr. Pavlo Sheremeta (the Chairman and Group CEO, Eastern Europe and Central Asia Blue Ocean Strategy Regional Institute). 

During the first day of the event the conference participants had a possibility to listen to the presentations delivered by the outstanding keynote speakers such as prof. Piotr Ploszajski (the professor at Warsaw School of Economics (SGH), Poland) on the topic “How the World is Changing”, dr. Vladas Lasas (CEO of UPS Authorised service contractor in Lithuania), who revealed the Paradigm shifts in the thinking of corporations, and prof.  Andrzej K. Kozminski (president of L. Kozminski University, Poland ) on the topic  “Is the Next Revolution in Management Education Coming Soon?” .

At the end of the first day conference participants had a possibility to share their ideas and insights as well as to discuss about the role of leadership during the Round table discussion.

The second day of the conference started with visits to the selected successful Polish companies: Intel, Lotos group, Meritum bank, DCT Gdansk and Stefczyk Credit Union (SKOK). The companies shared with conference participants their experiences overcoming the challenging situations caused by the economical, social and the other changes and demonstrated the practical examples of successful leadership that helped them to survive and succeed during these turbulent times.

After the company visits the conference participants took part in the CEO Panel discussion actively  debating what Business and Academia could do together in order to succeed. The CEO Panel discussion was led by Mr. Mariusz C. Grendowicz (former CEO of BRE Bank, Poland) and included Mr. Ivo Matser (CEO of TSM Business School, The Netherlands), Mr. Boris Wenzel (CEO of DCT Gdansk, Poland) and Dr. Kakha Shengelia (President of Caucasus University, Georgia).

As this year BMDA is celebrating 10 Years Anniversary, the President of BMDA, Dean of Adized Graduate School (USA) dr. Virginijus Kundrotas reviewed all the history of BMDA starting from generating the idea to create and establish such kind of Association, its mission, goals as well as describing implemented activities. Dr. Virginijus Kundrotas revealed the future activities, events and projects that are going to be implemented in the near future by the BMDA itself or together with its members and partners. 

The conference was finalized by inspiring keynote speech of prof. Jamie Anderson “The Fine Art of Success” that encouraged conference participants to think “out of the box”.  Prof. Jamie Anderson is a professor at Antwerp Management School (Belgium) and the Lorange Institute of Business (Switzerland), an award winning author and case writer, who has been named as a "management guru" by the Financial Times (2011).

To celebrate the 10th Annual BMDA conference participants gathered at the Gala dinner which took place at the Posejdon hotel on the Baltic Sea coast. 

During the Gala dinner BMDA team thanked Conference sponsors: Emerald Publishing Group (UK), JSC PAPYRUS LIETUVA (Lithuania), SC LINAS (Lithuania), DCT Gdansk SA (Poland), NDI (Poland), Robyg (Poland), Gdansk Business Club (Poland), Mr. Göran Collert (Sweden). 

Also, BMDA congratulated its new Corporate, Institutional and Individual members: SC Linas (Lithuania), EBS University (Germany), IDRAC International School of Management (Italy), University College of Economics and Culture (Latvia), Lomonosov Moscow State University Business School (Russia) The Higher School of Finance and Management of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (Russia), The Italian Association for Management Development - ASFOR (Italy), The Association of Business Schools –ABS (United Kingdom), Mr. Carl Håkan Källåker  (Sweden), Mr. Göran Collert (Sweden), Ingrida Verdingovaite (Lithuania), Agne Dirziuviene (Lithuania) and presented Membership certificates to those new BMDA members who participated at the event.

During the event, the Certificates to Emerald/BMDA Management Research Fund Award runners up prof.  Femi Odebiyi (LCC International University, Lithuania) and prof. Tatiana Khvatova (St. Petersburg State Polytechical University, Russia) had been presented.

All those activities had been followed by the music and dancing, where all the participants had chance to express their artistic abilities. 

All in all, this conference was the place for debate and dialogue, the platform for exchanging experiences, and the meeting place for all parties involved in leadership and strategic development as well as experiencing joyful moments together!
